Laws at every level have been passed in an effort to stem criminal behavior and the serious violence associated with youth gangs (Dukes, Martinez, & Stein,1997). The National Gang Threat Assessment report estimates that there are approximately 900,000 gang members residing within local communities and more than 147,000 documented gang members incarcerated (National Alliance of Gang Investigators Associations, 2009). The problem of violent young gangs is growing and given that there has been a noticeable increase in gang involvement among youth from Southeast Asian (SEA) decent throughout the past twenty years, it is essential that research involving this particular group's gang membership and affiliations be more in-depth and specific. Unfortunately, in the vast research on gangs, there is still very little known about the Southeast Asian population and their emerging involvement in gang activity. Why are those who immigrated or whose families were refugees from Southeast Asia more vulnerable than other Asian groups to the influences of the gang culture? Is there a relationship to the trauma and forced relocation that so many Southeast Asian families suffered during the Vietnam War and their children's willingness to place themselves at risk of incarceration, physical harm or death as a result of being in a gang?

This qualitative study looks to shed light on these questions by using the experiences of past and current gang members through in-depth interviews, to examine and explain the reasons why they chose to join a gang and what are the shared experiences by all. This study also explores the role of the family, one's immigration history, level of acculturation, and societal factors that influence Southeast Asian males to join gangs. It allows a voice to a community that is often forget or ignored by mainstream America.
