This study documents the church planting efforts of the Thailand Assemblies of God (TAG) from 1969-2009. Preliminary research showed that the TAG had periods of growth in the establishment of new churches, but also experienced periods of languidness in relation to church growth. Grounded theory was employed to allow the flexibility needed to gather data on Thai church planting models.

Historical analysis of the TAG provided insight into the issues surrounding today's church planting environment leading toward conclusions. A fundamental aspect of this historical study was to determine what church planting methods were employed that resulted in the establishment of our present churches by establishing what year each church was planted, what year these churches became part of the TAG, and whether or not these churches transferred from other church organizations. A historical sketch charted patterns in church planting within the TAG. The research implemented thirteen life and career histories of national church leaders and missionaries as data sources of information on how and why church leaders planted churches in Thailand; eight Thai TAG leaders and five missionaries who have had long-term involvement in Thailand.

In addition to interviews, historical document analysis, life and career histories, written surveys and peer review were also employed in data retrieval. Following the grounded theory method, all interview material was codified and research findings were recorded as such: Bible school education, operation of the supernatural, the church building and self-support are highly valued; large crusades are no longer viable as a church planting method, but the mother-daughter church planting method is viable in modern-day Thailand and relationship evangelism is crucial in church planting.

Through the collection, analysis, codification and reporting of data a grounded theory emerged with three recommendations for the Thailand Assemblies of God: reconnect the National Bible School to the local churches to allow ministry students to gain practical experience, employ the mother-daughter church planting model for future church planting initiatives, and establish relationship districts into the TAG organizational structure.
