This qualitative study looked at the influence Baby Boomers and Millennials have on each other and the impact that influence has on their separate work/life balance attitudes and behaviors. Baby Boomers were defined as those born between 1946 and 1966 and Millennials were defined as those born between 1980 and 2000. Fourteen interviews were conducted using the general interview guide approach; seven with members of the Baby Boomer population and seven with members of the Millennial population.

This study supported previous research which found that culture is transmitted from an older generation to a younger generation and this research supported that finding (Castro, Castro-Nogueira, Castro-Nogueira, & Toro, 2010). Even when omitting one generation, i.e. Generation X, there is still evidence of cultural transmission and influence from an older generation to a younger generation in the professional workforce. Two new themes emerged from the data. The first was that Baby Boomers tend to feel more influenced by their position on the career life cycle than they feel influenced by the younger generation. Issues such as their proximity to retirement, current position and future career ambitions were influencers on Baby Boomers' current attitudes and behaviors. Second, both Baby Boomers and Millennials desire a knowledge-share relationship to facilitate achievement and improvement.

Since Baby Boomers and Millennials desire to transmit knowledge and collaborate with each other, leaders can capitalize on these desires by creating a learning environment which increases the opportunity of interaction between the generations. Understanding and educating the generations on the motivations of other generations will help leaders positively influence the productivity of their employees.
