The Arthurian prose romances have experienced a revival recently, indicated both by new editions and critical interest. While some of this revival has included the Merlin texts, little revision of older, negative, attitudes toward these works has resulted. This study begins by examining some of the literary background, leading into the Vulgate Merlin and the Suite du Merlin, the central focus being Merlin himself.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The Arthurian prose romances have experienced a revival recently, indicated both by new editions and critical interest. While some of this revival has included the Merlin texts, little revision of older, negative, attitudes toward these works has resulted. This study begins by examining some of the literary background, leading into the Vulgate Merlin and the Suite du Merlin, the central focus being Merlin himself.

The introduction looks at some problems that have arisen in classifying the prose romances. As part of the discussion, the romance genre and the role of fantasy within romance are considered.

Working from Celtic tales and saints' lives, the nature of the good magician is discussed as a preliminary step. While no argument for influence is put forth, attitudes revealed in these works are crucial to judging Merlin.

The figure of Merlin first takes definite shape in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae. The emphasis here is on the demonic undertones Geoffrey lays down in the portrayal of Merlin and how that influences his prophecies. The ambiguity Geoffrey thereby creates emphasizes a subtle irony at play as the narrative progresses.

Unlike the Historia, Geoffrey's Vita Merlini makes a strong case for a saintly, not demonic, Merlin. Merlin renounces his worldly responsibilities for a life of solitude and peace, and the technique Geoffrey uses parallels that in saints' lives.

The Vulgate Merlin emphasizes the social context in which Merlin works to promote Arthur's welfare and lay the groundwork for the Grail quest. The portrayal of Merlin reveals the narrative's underlying religious themes, here bordering on the monastic. Merlin's role is extremely active, as he is Arthur's primary advisor and mentor.

The Suite du Merlin, by contrast, presents a more autonomous Arthur and weaker Merlin. Instead of king's advisor, Merlin is predominantly just the facilitator for the Quest. Again, Merlin's portrayal reflects the religious tone, here more individualized than communal.

The conclusion turns to Malory's Le morte Darthur to demonstrate another, even more diminished, role for Merlin and discuss some ramifications for his varied roles for the classification of these works within the romance genre.
