Research conducted during the past two centuries has revealed ethnic and racial health care disparities to be a major social problem. Racial and ethnic disparities can be attributed to socio-economic (SES), and limited access to the health care systems. Documented disparities exist in the United States between the majority of Whites and various ethnic minority populations. Many aspects of health have improved over the past decade, but disparity among the different demographics factors (e.g. race, low SES, and gender), lifestyle differences, and poor neighborhood environments continues to exist. The US has witnessed major advances in recognizing and reporting health care disparities and its social determinants. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of a Hispanic community in the city of San Antonio, Texas. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in a national statement of health objectives as listed in its Healthy People 2020 initiative, indicated one of its goals was to eliminate health care disparities. This qualitative case study used semi-structured, open-ended questions and observations to determine, whether Hispanics in a community in the city of San Antonio had adequate access, and if their health care needs were being met. The perceptions and experiences of 12 Hispanic participants were explored. Analysis of responses revealed themes related to each research question. Findings indicated that participants with education had better access to health care and better jobs to afford health insurance coverage. The majority of participants had transportation, access to health care and prevention programs and several participants felt discriminated based on race or lack of funding to pay for health care. Recommendations for future research include (a) survey local community health programs and outreach activities related to prevention programs (b) dissemination of information related to the Affordable Care Act, and (c) any future research develop stronger open-ended questions for the interviews so that any response from participants has to be in some form of essay or lengthy response. Upon reflection of the results of the research, it can be determine that current results coincide with results from past research.
