This descriptive qualitative study explored the experiences of elementary mainstream teachers working with ELLs. The study showed the importance of knowing the culture and educational background of English Language Learners when implementing teaching strategies such as differentiated instruction. It draws attention to school curricular reforms linked to ELL culture and addressed the need for professional development related to cultural differences. Data revealed five themes: (a) recognition of ELL cultural and educational backgrounds in curriculum development; (b) lack of professional development on ELL issues for mainstream teachers; (c) need for promoting involvement of ELL parents; (d) authentic assessment of ELLs; (e) effectiveness of differentiated instruction; and (e) need for collaboration between teachers in support of ELLs. Study results could be used to address issues related to ELLs in terms of instructional strategies, and social, legal, and political issues. This study addressed the need for professional development for mainstream teachers on ELL issues as well as the need for teacher and school cultural awareness and sensitivity to ELL cultural and academic differences.
