This study explores the effects of neighborhood revitalization and redevelopment efforts on residents of the Botanical Heights neighborhood. Revitalization efforts often focus on the discourse of cleaning up an area in decay and the value of having new places of consumption within the city, such as restaurants and shopping centers. This study takes a deeper and more diverse look into the perspectives of community residents, business owners, and neighborhood leaders in an attempt to further understand what it is like to live through a revitalization process. Guided by critical theories of authenticity, cultural capital, and spectacle, the study uses the qualitative methods of interviews, questionnaires, and participant observation in order to illuminate the dominant discourses within the neighborhood and reveal the structures of power and privilege that allow for the maintenance and possible transformation of such discourses.
