A clear scope and charter, appropriate project resources, knowledge management, motivation, effective project communication, and skillful project management are all elements frequently identified as crucial to project success. The reason why teams are successful or unsuccessful when participating in team activities -- despite high levels of technical expertise -- has become a topic of significant interest in organizational settings. In recent years there has been increasing awareness that the extent of expertise related to project success is not only limited to technical knowledge, but also require knowledge about the human side of project management. Although it is well understood that project teams comprise of individuals with specific character traits, skills, and interests, there exists a gap in current project management literature as to whether there is a link between an individual's motivation and his/her project communication. This study gathered data in order to determine if there is such a relationship; also to determine if project members representing the IT departments have different perceptions of motivation or effective communication than their business peers. The results of this study provided quantitative evidence to confirm the existence of relationships between some motivation sources and effective communication factors. No evidence was found that there is significant differences in the perception of IT and business team members on either motivation or effective communication. This study, therefore, begins to fill the gaps in the existing literature regarding these topics.
