Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2014.
This study focused on whether attitudes towards seeking help, which is impacted by public and self-stigma could influence choice of counseling modality (distance or traditional or no counseling) in postparental women. The sample of 184 women aged 40 to 60 years did not have children or grandchildren living in the home. Postparental women could experience a time of celebration or desperation when they are no longer full-time parents and seeking psychological help can be beneficial. However, the impact of public and self-stigma could influence whether they seek psychological help or not and their choice of counseling modality (traditional/face-to-face counseling, distance counseling or no counseling). The labeling theory supports why people do not want to be categorized as having mental health issues because of the stigma they experience and the obstacles they encounter when labeled with a psychiatric diagnosis. Alternative approaches to counseling such as distance counseling can allow clients to seek help without the stigma of traditional counseling. Survey results were collected electronically and the findings of the multinomial logistic regression model reflected that higher levels of self-stigma increased the odds of selecting distance counseling over traditional/face-to-face counseling and having more children increased the odds of not being interested in counseling over traditional counseling. Future studies are necessary to explore the efficacy of distance counseling and whether it could improve utilization of mental health services.
