Thesis (M.S.)--University of California, Davis, 2012.
Novel genetically dwarf hybrid Oriental lilies (Lilium Oriental hybrid) were forced as potted plants using two temperature treatments to ascertain the effects of temperature on the growth and development of these varieties. The warmer treatment averaged 25.6 air temperature during the day and 16.5 at night; the cooler treatment averaged 21.7 during the day and 14.6 at night. Several key stages (emergence, visible bud, and flowering) of the forcing phase were affected by temperature, with plants in the cooler treatment averaging delays of 5 days to one week behind the plants in the warmer treatment. This work also focused on the development of a decision support tool called a bud meter with the goal of aiding growers in accurately scheduling the production of this crop for a target shipping date. Bud meters were created for each of the varieties tested using an exponential model. Further validation is required.
