The "Magical Negro" in Disney Film.
- 93 p.
Source: Masters Abstracts International, Volume: 52-03.
Thesis (M.A.)--Hawaii Pacific University, 2013.
This study examined how the "Magical Negro" stereotype in film is meant to be a positive stereotype, but is rooted in portrayals of Black characters in early American film depictions. The presence of the Magical Negro stereotype was also located in the overall narratives and plots of three Disney films: Aladdin, The Lion King, and The Princess and the Frog. The use of old stereotypes in the plots of these films, the specific qualities of magic of the Magical Negro and use of "Black speech" patterns to identify Black characters were revealed through a rhetorical close viewing method. These critical viewings suggest how in the 21st century, racial stereotypes continue to perpetuate harmful perceptions of Black Americans and other non-White minorities in the U.S.A.
