As the real-life dancers of Edgar Degas' era have generally been left out of the historical discourse, this paper seeks to address the artistic careers of late-nineetenth-century Paris Opera ballerinas. Archival research has allowed a foregrounding of the first-person female perspective throughout an investigation of the dancers' training, repertoire, and relationship to other artists of the Opera community. The dancers' accounts of their artistic practice contradicts some of the commonly-held assumptions regarding the reputation and repertoire of late-nineteenth-century ballerinas, revealing an alternative characterization of this forgotten generation of hard-working and conscientious female artists who endured myriad hardships to enjoy successful careers at one of the world's most famous theatres.
