Following a critical introduction, this dissertation will present the first English translations of Paul Gauguin's five major texts: For Aline (1893), Noa Noa (1893-94), This and That (1896 - January 1898), Catholicism and Modern Consciousness (1902) and Idle Chatter (September 1902). In an effort to bring his writing to the fore as an integral part of his approach to art-making, this analysis seeks to re-evaluate the role of Gauguin's texts as the conceptual blueprint guiding the subjects of several paintings. This dissertation also shows that Gauguin's activities as a reader most definitely directed the ideas underlying some of his most elusive art works.

520 $a In annotating his five texts, I have been able to locate hundreds of Gauguin's exact literary sources. This has revealed the role which the written word occupied in the creation of images, as well as Gauguin's re-invention of the writings of other authors into original literary works. Cette these est suivie par les premieres traductions anglaises des cinq livres rediges par Paul Gauguin, entre les annees 1893 et 1902 : Cahier pour Aline, Noa Noa, Diverses choses, L'Esprit moderne et le catholicisme et Racontars de rapin. Le but de cette analyse est de montrer que ses recits ont non seulement guide les sujets de plusieurs tableaux, mais que ceux-ci representent le schema conceptuel de ses idees. Les recits sont suivis par plus de mille annotations qui exposent des centaines de sources precises, attestant au role de l'ecriture dans la creation de ses images. En se basant sur les ouvrages de plusieurs auteurs pour transcrire ses propres textes, Gauguin a pu egalement creer des oeuvres litteraires originales.
