The current study modified an existing psychological assessment tool. The new Emotional Assessment System-III (EAS-III) was developed utilizing items from the Emotional Assessment System (EAS; Choca, et al., 2001), EAS-II version of the computer-based psychodiagnostic assessment measure. This study examined all 842 items of the EAS-II utilizing Item Response Theory (IRT) to select the best-performing items for inclusion in the new measure. Items were designed to reflect the diagnostic criteria in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) classifications of mental illness. The study successfully reduced the number of items to 310 based on the item analysis and clinical content. Items were selected by mining archival data on both clinical and non-clinical respondents.
