The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), scheduled to turn on later this year, will provide the next jump ahead in high energy experiment. It is widely expected that the LHC will provide evidence of physics beyond the current Standard Model. In this dissertation I study both specific signals for a post-discovery study of Supersymmetry, a theory presently considered promising, as well as generically applicable restrictions on the commonly used Narrow Width Approximation (NWA) using Supersymmetry as an example case.

First, I calculate cross sections for mixed stop-sbottom pair production at the LHC, analogous to single-top production, a weak process involving the W-t˜i-b˜ jvertex. While coupling-suppressed relative to QCD same-flavor squark pair production, the signal is distinctive due to heavy-flavor tagging along with a possible same-sign lepton pair in the final state. SUSY backgrounds can often be suppressed many orders of magnitude by taking advantage of distinct kinematic differences from the signal. Measuring the rate of this process would add significant additional information to that gathered from other SUSY processes in particular. If the stop and sbottom mixings can be determined elsewhere, stop-sbottom production would provide for a measurement of the weak squark gauge coupling and super-CKM vertex factor.

The narrow width approximation is used in high energy physics to simplify scattering calculations. It is a fortunate accident that it works well for the Standard Model, but in the context of new physics we find that often the NWA is an unexpectedly poor approximation. This failure stems from three main sources. The first is an effect of integrating the fully off-shell (OFS) matrix elements over q2 of the resonant pole. The second is interference with non-resonant diagrams. The third, present in hadron colliders such as the LHC, is convolution of the resonance shape with steeply-falling parton distribution functions. Each of these effects can be as large as or larger than the residual QCD uncertainties. If these effects are not taken into account, attempts to reconstruct the Lagrangian of a new physics discovery from data could result in considerable inaccuracies and likely inconsistencies.

In order to mitigate the effect of the q2 integration, an Improved Narrow Width Approximation (INWA) has recently been developed [77]. This approximation aims to properly include the entire phase space of a decay and so greatly reduce the error while avoiding the necessity of a fully off-shell calculation.

I show some basic types of processes that present difficulties under the NWA and which of those may be reasonably treated with the INWA. A small set of processes remain in which neither approximation successfully reproduces the fully off-shell calculation to a satisfactory degree. I am able to provide some guidance, but no fully reliable pattern emerges to predict all cases.
