Although there is an increasing amount of research on seeking support in cyberspace, not much is known about how instant messenger (IM) influence its users' support-seeking experience. The proposed study examined how online status of contacts on one's IM list might influence the individual's coping with a stressful situation and his/her likelihood of seeking support from others. Results showed that individuals were more likely to seek support from a particular IM contact when that contact was shown to be online than when the contact was shown to be offline. Further, perceived social presence of contact mediated the influence of contact's online status on individuals' likelihood of seeking support from the contact. The number of the other contacts who were online did not seem to have any impact on facilitating individuals' coping or support seeking.
