The goal of research is to explore perceptions of womanhood among African American women and black immigrant women living in California. My research question is: How do U.S.-born African American women and immigrant black women define womanhood? Particular attention will be paid to how womanhood shapes their identity, motherhood/family, gender performance, and racial experiences. Sixteen (l6) women were interviewed, eight (8) African American and eight (8) black immigrant women. The black immigrant women interviewed were from Panama, Jamaica, Ghana, Belize, Bermuda, Virgin Islands, Nigeria, and Guyana. These were in-depth interviews that lasted 45 minutes to an hour. Three major findings emerged from this study. African American women and women from the Caribbean and Central American are more similar than different in their views of womanhood. The women in both groups view their marriages as equal partnerships. Also African American women have high levels of racial consciousness, and racial pride in who they are as black women. Lastly, I found that the African women had more conservative views of marriage and gender roles than my other participants.
