Thesis (D.H.A.)--University of Phoenix, 2012.
This phenomenological case study explored the lived experiences, emotions, functions, and practices of staff caregivers at one assisted living facility in Alexandria, Virginia concerning elders transitioning to an assisted living facility. Fifteen participant health care providers, comprising of licensed practical nurses (LPNs), certified nursing assistants (CNAs), and medical technicians (MTs), responded to 10 open-ended questions about what common situations are experienced by elder residents who transition to an assisted living facility and what knowledge and skills of staff caregivers are necessary to enhance the quality of life in assisted living facilities. The caregivers at one assisted living facility provided constructive information which was analyzed to recognize the meaning of the lived experience of staff caregivers concerning the transitioning process of elders at assistant living facilities. Five major themes emerged: Timely Daily Functions of Caregivers, Positive Interpersonal Relations Among Caregivers and Elder Residents, Personal Management Results in Building Community, Knowledge of Internal Policies Equip Caregivers to Provide Quality Care, and Mental and Emotional Conditions of Elder Residents Impact Quality of Life. The results of the study may assist caregivers at assisted living facilities to enhance the quality of life and quality of care of residents.
