Nurse practitioners (NPs) are a strong force in improving access to primary health care for many Americans. Nurse practitioners have a strong record of accomplishment of providing both high quality primary care and access to care for underserved populations including older adults. A review of the literature reveals that there are many studies looking at comparisons between NPs and physicians related to clinical outcomes, and patient satisfaction. However, not many studies evaluate what people understand the role of the NP to be. This non-experimental descriptive study looked at the perceptions of the role of nurse practitioners among older adults ages 62 and beyond. Whether elders had received health care from a NP in the past, either personally or a family member, positively influenced the subsequent health care choice of the elder for an NP.
