Throughout history, literary philosophers have utilized storytelling to deliver their ideas of what constitutes a utopian or dystopian society. While the author's message in this genre is usually clear, the intent of one such work has been debated by scholars for centuries---Thomas More's Utopia. More's real-life actions often seemed at odds with the social order in his Utopia. As Lord Chamberlain under Henry VIII, More sent many "heretics" and Lutheran sympathizers to their deaths. Yet polytheism is a staple of Utopian society.

520 $a Using the contextualism of New Historicism, and by examining More's actions and non-fiction writings alongside Utopian ideals, this thesis argues that the sixteenth-century persecutor-turned-martyr was more consistent than not with the laws of his fictional society, even after Martin Luther came on the scene. Utopian society is progressive in many ways, but punishments for certain crimes are severe. Herein lie the consistencies with the real Thomas More.
