Thesis (M.A.L.S.)--Dartmouth College, 2012.
Even though the term seems to privilege one side of this fairly new artistic medium, the so-called graphic novel is comprised of both image and text. While text-only writing compels the reader to imagine what is being described, the text and image in graphic novels enhance each other in complex ways that raise a number of questions. Towards a Visual Culture: An Examination of the Effect of Graphic Novels on the Relationship Between Text and Image examines how the pictorial presence effects the narrative timing of these hybrid texts, and the reception of their stories by readers. In addition to addressing issues in both narrative theory and reader-response criticism, this study contextualizes the graphic novel historically by comparing these hybrid works against other mediums which utilize image and text in their narrative structures, and also examines the scholarly debates surrounding the genre classification of the graphic novel.
