Thesis (M.Env.St.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2009.
Model Forests were first established in 1992, as "living laboratories," where partnerships of diverse stakeholders work towards sustainability. A transition period during 2007, at the end of the Model Forest Program, offered an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of the Model Forests. A conceptual framework based on literature on sustainability, resilience, and learning in collaborative contexts addresses: why a legacy might be desirable; what it would mean to last; what would last; and what would help a legacy to last. Twenty-two interviews with key informants in three Model Forests in Atlantic Canada reveal the complex nature of learning about the ecological and social system in a Model Forest. Interviewees also describe features of the organizations, partnerships, and broader context that were crucial to their Model Forest's lastingness. The research supports broadening the conceptualization of a Model Forest legacy from a list of concrete achievements to include less-tangible outcomes.
