Thirty percent of all teenage mothers and 38% of African American teenage mothers cite motherhood as the reason for dropping out of school. There are also a significantly lower percentage of African American students who graduate from high school compared to European American students. Applying a phenomenological qualitative design, the study sought to explore the impact of teenage pregnancy on the high school education of African American teenage mothers. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews to better understand, from the perspectives of young African American mothers, what factors, services, and supports young African American mothers believe they received or needed to complete high school. Participants included 16 African American young women between the ages of 18-22 years old who attended a high school in a large city in a South Atlantic state and experienced teenage pregnancy while attending high school. The results of this study indicate that African American teenage mothers describe their experiences with parenting while attending school as difficult, and the majority of the participants believed that having a child slowed or stopped their academic progress. The results further identified their major needs as family support, childcare, and encouragement.
