This project evaluates the need and applicability of Environmental Self-Assessments and Environmental Management Systems (EMS) as tools for measuring and monitoring the environmental risks associated with livestock auction markets.

Initial chapters assess the status of EMSs within the agriculture industry and identify the legislation and regulatory systems concerning Alberta's livestock auction markets. Significant barriers and driving forces related to implementing these tools are included. As well, strategies to overcome specified barriers are presented. Two prominent features of this MDP include: (1) The design of a self-evaluation tool to assess the environmental risks associated with livestock auction markets. Risks are identified and actions to be completed are stated and then prioritized. (2) An EMS framework is developed using a case study to address the environmental actions and priorities for a livestock auction market.

In conclusion, recommendations are made as to how this self-assessment can be used as a decision making tool for livestock auction markets and identifies research needs and future opportunities regarding EMS and agriculture.
