In this study, the recent influence of English and other Western languages is compared with the past and continuing influence of Chinese (the term here used generically) on the Japanese language. It is the first systematic comparison of the two cases, and involves the presentation and discussion of data pertaining to phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and lexical change. The study also introduces a new system of classification of the loanwords of Japanese, emphasizing the source of word-building stimulation (China, India, and the West) and the type of morpheme utilized (native, Sino-Japanese, Indo-Japanese, Anglo-Japanese, etc.).Subjects--Topical Terms:

The major conclusions of the study are: (1) that the patterns and strategies of assimilation developed in the past by the Japanese to deal with Chinese linguistic material are, for the most part, identical to those recently or presently used to deal with material from Western languages, and (2) that a detailed classification of the lexemes of modern Japanese suggests, an even higher level of Western influence than is presently recognized. This qualitative study may provide a basis for more quantitative kinds of research in the future.
