Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2013.
In the United States, over 15 million unpaid caregivers who will eventually experience the death of their family member are providing care for a person diagnosed with dementia (Alzheimer's Association, 2012). The progressive decline in memory and other cognitive abilities as well as the ambiguous dying trajectory associated with various types of dementia create substantial challenges for family caregivers and make it difficult to prepare for the death of the care receiver (Volicer, 2005). These challenges along with the staggering statistics regarding incidence of dementia emphasize the need for research to support caregivers.

The purpose of this dissertation is to (a) to define preparedness and ascertain its potential value to caregivers; (b) explore bereaved caregivers' experiences with preparedness for the death of a family member from a dementia-related diagnosis; and (c) to identify recommendations that caregivers would make to professionals about how to prepare family members for the death of a person with dementia. By increasing our understanding of this phenomenon as well as the experiences, needs, and preferences of family caregivers of elders who die from advanced dementia, we may identify ways to enhance quality of care and gain the necessary knowledge in order to develop and test interventions that address these caregivers' distinctive needs.
