520 $a A start has to be made in solving these problems and the stakes are huge in terms of human well-being. The condition of the ultimate environment, the interiors where we live, love, work and play, cannot help but be one of the most important factors in our survival as rational, functioning human beings as the population explosion, pollution, crowding and the other manifold ills of our increasingly complex civilization make more and more lives unpleasant, unhealthy and dangerous.
520 $a Because the exterior world of today is mostly so noisy, dirty and crowded, the interior environment becomes the refuge for most of us; and, since relief from these exterior conditions promises to be slow, our interior spaces become much more important to man and his future.
520 $a What follows is a collection of data interwoven with practical experiences; since most of the studies cited were not originated with interior design as their primary objective, what follows actually becomes a plea for more research---specifically oriented to interior design.
520 $a It is unacceptable to this writer to continue to design interiors and to continue to teach interior design while ignoring this vast and scattered body of applicable knowledge; thus, this is an attempt to gather some of it, interrelate it, integrate it, and point the way perhaps to other sources where more material that could be useful might be found. Perhaps at the same time it might hopefully stimulate new research.
