520 $a Too often the Marian reading of the Song of Songs (the approach that considers the Virgin Mary as the sponsa, the Beloved, the Espoused bride of the Song of Songs) is seen as the only one relevant to early English literature. Often Mary as bride is not considered in the context--or better the "company" of the other two "brides," the Church, Ecclesia and the Soul, Anima. The present analysis of the literature finds that The Marian readings are indeed important in the use of the Song of Songs, but that the other readings (notably ones explicating the "dream vision" of Song 5,2-8) help form early lyrics, sermon verses, some of the Canterbury Tales, some scenes in Troilus and Criseyde (indirectly), and the literature of homiletic and drama--sometimes in conjunction with the Marian reading.
520 $a In the strictly Marian sphere of Song of Songs interpretation and allusion, we confront two contrasting sets of religio-cultural "moments"--the epic and the romantic--in varied combination and juxtaposition. Song 6,9 is a favorite text for the epic, martial moment and Song 2,10-13 for the romantic and paradisiacal. In the fifteenth century, we do find an increasing tendency in English to view Mary in isolation from the other "brides," and to return to the earlier emphasis on Mary's epic or imperial identity as Queen of Heaven in the Quae est ista verses of the Song of Songs and the second phrase of the Veni electa mea antiphon. From the Blickling homilist and Aelfric to Chaucer and Lydgate, writers had to struggle for an appropriate balance when they used this "loaded" biblical text to characterize the paradoxical figure of the Virgin Mother.
