My dissertation is a scholarly edition: Selected Letters of Vernon Lee (1856--1935). It includes approximately 280 letters written between the years 1870 and 1933---correspondence to her family as well as various friends and colleagues.

I transcribed all the letters from manuscript: most of them from the Vernon Lee archive at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and from archives I visited in Florence, her home for most of her life. The remainder are transcribed from reproductions ordered from archives in the United States and England. I selected letters pertinent to Lee's professional life as a critic and fiction writer---those that discuss her books, research, and the experiences that influenced her work. I did not include letters of only a personal nature. The order of the letters is chronological, with headnotes that give biographical and cultural contexts.

The transcriptions retain Lee's abbreviations, paragraph breaks, and punctuation. Silent corrections were made to misspellings,1 slips of the pen2 and the occasional missing word. The footnotes document deleting of words and phrases and similar pertinent stages of composition, such as later insertions. Explanatory annotation in the footnotes provides information about the people, places, and events she writes about; bibliographical information of her works and the books she discusses; and clarifications of phrasing or language.

The introduction gives a biographical assessment, description of the manuscripts, and an explanation of my editorial policy. I conclude the selection with an appendix that lists information on the archives I consulted, to be of use to future researchers. My intention with this edition is to compile a record of the Lee letters I have found and to represent them responsibly. The letters themselves will speak to the intellectual development of an independent critic and scholar who offered contributions to the fields of art history, literary criticism, and political polemics.

1If it is a significant misspelling, such as a person's name, I retain it and provide a footnote of explanation. 2Slips of the pen such as words that were incorrectly begun, crossed out, and then written correctly will be silently corrected. More significant revisions will be noted.
