Research and professional training programs have identified the importance of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the daily role of registered nurses (RNs). However, it is unknown why there is a significant gap in the use of CAM therapies, particularly Reiki, by RNs at the bedside of patients in the hospital setting. This quantitative, cross-sectional study of 80 RNs used a self-reporting survey to determine whether there is an association between the use of bedside practice behaviors by RNs and their beliefs, as measured by the Integrative Medicine Attitude Questionnaire, the CAM Health Belief Questionnaire, and the Reiki Questionnaire; levels of clinical and Reiki education; and levels of clinical and Reiki experience. The theoretical frameworks that guided this study were the intrapersonal level of perspective theory, theory of planned behavior, unitarian human beings model, nursing as the science of caring theory, and relationship-based care model. The Pearson product-moment correlation and multiple linear regression analysis showed that level of Reiki education and level of Reiki experience were not statistically significant in predicting the use of Reiki behaviors at the bedside. However, the reported beliefs in the use of Reiki had statistical significance in predicting the use of Reiki behaviors at the bedside. The implications for positive social change suggest the need for more education and awareness in the holistic healing practices of Reiki in the core curriculum of standard nursing education programs to develop RNs' belief in the use of Reiki. The earlier their exposure to alternative healing therapies, the greater is the potential for RNs to develop belief sets that are open to the use of Reiki and CAM therapies in clinical practice.
