Modern, or third wave, feminism represents itself as a remedy for the perceived failures of the first and second wave feminist movements. The third wave hopes to counter and correct feminism's exclusionary, classist legacy by incorporating gender and queer theory, anti-racist, anti-heterosexist, and anti-colonial ideologies. However, feminist ideologies that incorporated such ideas are not solely the invention of the third wave. Moreover, the third wave did not spring, fully formed, from the second wave imagination. They are both rooted in black feminism, if not black feminism writ large.
