Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2013.
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has evolved into a widely used technique providing diagnostic power in medicine and material sciences due to its high precision and non-invasive nature. 1H NMR/MRI is the most commonly studied nucleus because of its large gyromagnetic ratio and high natural abundance. 23Na is not utilized as much because of its lower sensitivity and fast relaxation. However, with advancements in spectroscopic/imaging hardware, contrast mechanisms and protocols, 23Na NMR/MRI has enjoyed renewed interest as a key probe towards investigative studies. The aim of this thesis is to develop new methods and apply them, as well as existing techniques, to study biological and geophysical systems.

In Chapter 1 some basic concepts of NMR and MRI are introduced. In addition, a discussion of quadrupolar dynamics, specifically for spin-3/2 nuclei, is presented to provide the theoretical basis to understand the underlying concepts in Chapters 3 and 5.

The change in Na+ concentration within cervical tissue during the course of pregnancy was studied Chapter 2. It was determined that the changes of [Na+] correlates with the biochemical measurement of glucosaminoglycan (GAG) which renders 23Na NMR a potential probe in tissue assessment. In addition to providing concentration information, examining the quadrupolar interaction of 23Na nuclei could be very informative. In Chapter 3, the combination of 23Na quadrupolar coupling and diffusion anisotropy allows differentiation of Na + present in specific tissue component of the optic nerve and estimation of the compartmental geometry.

Chapter 4 and 5 are dedicated to using 23Na NMR/MRI to study the geophysical properties of rock formation. In Chapter 4, 1H/23Na imaging experiments were conducted simultaneously during the flow of salt water through a rock core mimicking the invasion phenomenon in oil exploration. The images reveal that the flow profile for the two species may not necessarily coincide as commonly believed. Further steps are taken in Chapter 5 which aims to study the underlining interactions between Na+ and the core surfaces. A 2D quadrupolar jump-and-return sequence was developed and the result from which uncovered a distribution of quadrupolar coupling that is not seen by conventional methods.
