Continuous transverse reinforcement, hereafter referred to as CTR, is a mechanically bent steel reinforcing bar prefabricated to meet specified design spacing. CTR has become a point of interest as an alternative to conventional stirrups, hoops and ties in reinforced concrete design. This innovative product is similar to conventional (i.e. circular) spiral reinforcement but has a rectangular cross section. The steel is bent to specified dimensions and compressed for shipping purposes. It is untied at the construction site which allows CTR to self-expand to the required spacing. This process provides a reduction in time and labor requirements during construction. In addition, it could potentially provide an increase in structural concrete performance. Although the current edition of the American Concrete Institute Building Code (ACI 318-11) does not include design standards for CTR, Section 1.4 allows the use of approved alternative designs, provided that there has been ample research and documentation of the successful application or complete analysis of the special system. The aim of this thesis is to supply a portion of the necessary test data for this product in specific loading applications. For the purpose of this research, a series of 17 full-scale structural concrete specimens and 4 subsection tests were designed and constructed in accordance with the ACI 318-11 Code and industry standards. These specimens were then tested to failure in order to determine the adequacy of CTR in structural concrete design. This analytical study consisted of (a) simply supported beams undergoing shear type loading; (b) a repaired CTR specimen undergoing shear type loading; (c) individual segments of CTR embedded in concrete and loaded in tension to determine development of the angled legs; and (d) columns specimens in uniaxial compression to determine the effect on confinement capacity of CTR. Each group of tests incorporated a control specimen designed with conventional reinforcement for comparison. The data from these tests were synthesized to provide evidence that the use of this product could potentially be an adequate design alternative. Existing design provisions and recommendations for conventional transverse steel can be effectively used for CTR. In reference to serviceability, strength, ductility and failure mode, the product is consistent with conventional design for the loading types covered in this thesis. Additional research, beyond what is discussed in this thesis, is necessary for designing members intended to resist torsion or seismic type loads. The research indicates that the performance of this product is equivalent to conventional stirrups, hoops or ties, when used to provide shear resistance in the design of beams and when designing columns subjected to pure axial compression. Therefore, the use of continuous transverse reinforcement (CTR) is an adequate alternative to conventional transverse reinforcement for these applications.
