Thesis (M.P.H.)--University of Alaska Anchorage, 2014.
The purpose of this research was to explore the possible relationship between climate changes and the frequency of residential insecticide applications. Data were collected from the Kadena Air Base's Pest Management Program's housing insecticide application records over the past 26 years. Application data were compared with historic climate data from the Island of Okinawa, Japan. The number of insecticide applications increased significantly over the 26-year period. Average relative humidity demonstrated the strongest relationship to number of insecticide application. This research could make a significant contribution to public health by helping to determine the indirect impacts that climate change may have on the potential health effects of insecticide exposure, by increasing the need for household insecticide application. Additional research in this area may enable the development of improved, non-chemical prevention methods and introduce new areas of pest management research, reducing human health risks of insecticide exposure, for a globally changing climate.
