Forgiveness is an integral factor of interpersonal and psychological wellness. However, many studies do not conceptually differentiate between self-forgiveness and interpersonal forgiveness. Self-conscious emotions, which are influenced by parenting, aid to inform the development of multidimensional forgiveness. Further, psychologically controlling parenting can foster shame which is negatively related to self-forgiveness while warmth increases the probability that offspring will express empathy for others. The current study examined the relations between parenting behaviors and forgiveness as mediated through shame and empathy. Participants completed five questionnaires on-line through the university-sponsored website. The questionnaires contained measures of five constructs: forgiveness, empathy, shame, parental warmth, and parental psychological control. For interpersonal forgiveness, warmth was related to empathy which, in turn, was related to interpersonal forgiveness. For self-forgiveness, psychological control was related to shame, which in turn was related to self-forgiveness. However, psychological control was not significantly related to self-forgiveness.
