Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2014.
The purpose of this research was to examine if defendant race, SES, and attractiveness influence juror decision making for White and Latino jurors in cases where mothers are accused of killing their own children. Two-hundred and twenty-six European-American (N=109) and Latino (N=117) undergraduate students from California State University Fullerton acted as mock jurors and were asked to read a criminal court case transcript. Participants were randomly assigned to one of twelve conditions in a 3 (ethnicity of defendant: European-American, African-American or Latino) X 2 (attractiveness: unattractive and attractive) X 2(SES: high or low) between groups design. After reading the case transcript, participants were asked to provide a verdict, recommend a sentence, answer culpability questions, rate the defendant on a number of personality characteristics, and answer personal demographic questions. Based on previous research (Espinoza & Willis-Esqueda, 2008) and the theory of aversive racism (Dovidio & Gaertner, 1986), it was hypothesized that European-American mock jurors would find the low SES, unattractive, African-American and Latino defendants guilty more often, recommend lengthier sentences, find them more culpable, and rate these defendants more negatively on a number of personality traits. Results confirmed our hypotheses and European-American mock jurors only demonstrated bias when ethnicity was coupled with another perceived negative variable. Future directions and limitations of this study were discussed.
