This dissertation studies the banking system in Britain and American during the interwar period. Chapter 1 investigates the portfolio management decisions of London commercial banks during the interwar period when Britain's experienced a currency crisis and changed its monetary regime from contractionary to expansionary. Chapters 2 and 3 investigate the behavior of state-chartered banks in New York in the 1930s in response to legislation following the Great Depression of 1929-1932. Chapter 2 studies how the creation of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation affected depositor behavior during the period 1929-1938. Lastly, Chapter 3 examines the effect of the Federal Reserve's doubling of reserve requirements for member banks on bank lending between 1936 and 1937.
