Thesis (M.A.)--Saint Mary's College of California, 2013.
The purpose of this project is to present an intervention to address and buffer the negative influence media has on Latina adolescents in America. Young Latinas may desire to achieve unattainably high standards of beauty if comparing themselves to idealistic portrayals of attractiveness in magazines, movies, on television, and on the internet. The distorted perception that female beauty is characterized by young, tall, extremely thin women who have Euro-American features may cause teen girls in the Latino community to attempt to achieve an unobtainable standard. The pressure to fit narrow stereotypes of beauty could lead to body dissatisfaction, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. This project will provide a therapeutic intervention to model how Latina students can build healthy identities and improve self-esteem. Cognitive behavioral therapy coupled with rational emotive behavioral therapy will serve as the foundation for psychoeducation, support, and therapy as part of a group intervention.
