Alcohol abuse and related problems are common among college students and few seek help for such issues despite a range of evidence-based counseling techniques available to them for free on campus. The dissertation presents a quantitative research study that examined the effectiveness of a group-based motivational interviewing intervention on college students' likelihood of indicating that they would seek help at the counseling center on campus. Motivational interviewing has been recognized as an approach that helps in bringing about greater willingness to change, and thus it was reasonable to hypothesize that such an intervention would encourage students to seek help on campus if they were interested in making changes to their drinking habits. One hundred twenty- eight students at a community college in New York State served as participants in either a control group or an intervention group. Both groups completed a pretest and posttest, which consisted of a single question inquiring about their likelihood of seeking help at the counseling center on campus. Between-group and within-group comparisons indicated that those students who participated in the group-based motivational interviewing intervention were more likely to indicate that they would seek help in the case that they wanted to make changes to their drinking habits. These differences were statistically significant, as demonstrated by an independent samples t test and a repeated measures t test. The results support the existing literature on motivational interviewing and its role in the change process. The study also provides an efficient and cost-effective method of reaching a large number of college students and encouraging them to seek out available help as needed. The study provides professionals working with college students with a positive intervention to consider implementing on college campuses.
