The relationship between participation in regular exercise and personality characteristics has been previously examined, but it has not yet been determined if there is a conclusive relationship between regular exercise and an individual's personality structure. This study used a correlational design to explore the relationship between runner experience in years and positive personality characteristics (low neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness) among 249 female runners. The variables of interest were analyzed using data collected via an online survey. A Spearman's Rho correlation was used to determine the relationships. Results showed that only conscientiousness was significantly correlated with runner experience in years. Additionally, a Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationship between personality and runner experience in terms of the number of days per week participants run that yielded significant relationships between days per week and openness and conscientiousness. Results of this study suggest that there are positive relationships between runner experience in days per week and years and some traits of personality, and that more experience may mean higher levels of these traits. However, there were no statistically significant relationships between runner experience and the remaining personality trait domains.
