The Internet is an important part of U.S. society. Despite its ubiquity, there is no consensus in the literature about how the Internet affects social relationships, specifically social capital. One line of research suggests that the Internet promotes social connectivity, yet other research finds an increase in social isolation. These two perspectives provide competing hypotheses for the relationship between Internet use and social capital. This study seeks to adjudicate between these two positions by using a dataset that overcomes limitations of previous work. Using logistic regression and social trust as an indicator of social capital, this study finds that Internet use has a positive effect on social capital but that different uses of the Internet matter in diverse ways. These results suggest that Internet use can strengthen social networks and improve social capital, providing support for the perspective that the Internet increases social connections.
