I present two arguments against perdurantism, and I present a third argument against the conjunction of perdurantism and anti-essentialism. I argue that both perdurantism and the conjunction of perdurantism and anti-essentialism fail to provide an adequate explanation of facts about persistence and destruction (e.g., the fact that a certain vase is destroyed when it shatters). In particular, I argue that facts about persistence and destruction are explained by (i) facts about what "qualities" (roughly, natural properties) objects have, (ii) facts about the natural and artificial kinds to which objects belong, and (iii) facts about what de re modal properties objects have. Furthermore, I argue that perdurantism is incompatible with the claim that facts about persistence and destruction are explained by (i) or (ii), and I argue that the conjunction of perdurantism and anti-essentialism is incompatible with the claim that these facts are explained by (iii). I argue that these' results are unacceptable, and that perdurantism (and perhaps also anti-essentialism) should be rejected.
