The purpose of this qualitative study, with an appreciative action research approach, was to examine the needs of men diagnosed with an intellectual or a cognitive delay with a history of sexually offensive behavior through a collaborative process of inquiry. The overarching research question being: What are the needs of males diagnosed with an intellectual disability with a history of sexually offensive behavior? The research study sought to explore the needs of men diagnosed with an intellectual disability (ID) and a history of sexually offensive (SO) behavior by exploring program services and needs from the perspectives of the service providers who work directly with the men. An extensive review of the literature relative to men diagnosed with ID and a history of SO behaviors indicated that the focus has been primarily on etiology, assessment and treatment from the standpoint of clinicians and quantitative research done with actual "offenders" themselves. There is limited research that examines the effectiveness of community management interventions from the perspective of staff providing direct services to this population. This qualitative study's primary data collection was comprised from individual semi-structured interviews of 12 front line staff members (e.g. home managers, direct care staff, and behavior analysts). The site was one that provides community management services to the men. Data was collected through qualitative exploratory interviews with the participants, field journals, documentation and audit trails. The framework of this study was one of appreciative action research and had a focus of two goals; a) to better understand the needs men diagnosed with ID and a history of SO behavior and b) to use that understanding through an action research approach employing qualitative methods to enhance and expand treatment services to ensure habilitation of service recipients thereby keeping the community safe.
