This paper aims to assess the current situation of Chinese engagement with Latin American region. A closer examination of the events occurring between the Chinese state and that of the Latin American region as a whole will help to assess whether these ties present a challenge or threat to United States' hegemony in the region. How do such ties affect the United States and what actions can the U.S. do to mitigate such effects? As the research shows, China is increasing its engagement with Latin America, and this can affect the United States in various ways. U.S. influence has waned in recent years, and Latin America and China relations have both grown and expanded. At present though, China does not appear to be a threat now, but in the future Chinese engagement could be a threat for U.S. hegemony in the region. China's current engagement with the Latin American region does have some challenges with it, but with the appropriate diplomatic actions on behalf of the United States, some of these challenges can be overcome. The U.S. should focus at working in partnerships via multilateral institutions and organizations. The U.S. can also have China become part of the world's multilateral institutions and world legal and financial order already set in place. In securing such working partnerships, the U.S. can still attain its foreign policy goals and maintain its security.
