Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2013.
The purpose of this project is to aid clinicians, children and their families in the fight against obesity, more specifically childhood obesity. This project consists of a selective review of the current literature regarding causes of childhood overweight and obesity. Pediatric overweight and/or obesity is a significant health issue, that if not appropriately intervened, will continue to carry enormous ramifications that will greatly alter an individual's quality of life. To augment the research findings from the selective literature review, the author obtained consultation with specialists who are experts in the field and work with at-risk children. It is important to psychoeducate parents, our society and those in the helping professions who are surrounded by children, about the possible causes, associated health risks and possible interventions. In order to best disseminate information obtained from both the selective literature review and field consultant interviews, the author created and delivered a PowerPoint presentation, in which positive feedback was received. In conclusion, pediatric overweight and/or obesity is treatable, with prevention its best ally and psychoeducation its greatest tool.
