Researchers of the Vietnam War have paid considerable attention to male soldiers and male political figures on all sides of the Vietnam War. Often absent from the war narratives are the stories of Vietnamese women who occupied equally important spaces in history. My research aims to examine the contributions, responsibilities and experiences of Vietnamese women throughout Vietnam during the Vietnam War who participated in the revolutionary movement against American and their South Vietnamese allies. Through analysis of interviews with former revolutionaries, memories, government documents, photos, and documentaries, I seek to understand the reasons for women's participation, the type of tasks they performed, and the ways in which women negotiated the dual roles of the traditional mother and the war revolutionary. I also aim to investigate the relationship between gender and the nation against the backdrop of war and women's lives in a post-conflict society. Through my examination of the types of activities women performed during war, I argue that Vietnamese women's wartime responsibilities provide insight into how traditional understandings and beliefs regarding gender roles shaped women's actions in war while maintaining their secondary status to men.
