Positive measures of attitude toward computers include computer efficacy, computer perceived ease of use, and computer playfulness. Much of the past research on computer attitude using these measures was performed in an education environment. This research is directed toward electronic technicians, certified at three competency levels by an international association of public safety employees and employers. The demographic variables of certification level, age, and years of formal education were collected by mail survey. Scores were computed for the positive attitude measures of computer efficacy, computer playfulness, and computer ease of use. Also included were measures of self assessment of computer skill, electronic troubleshooting skill and frequency of computer use.

Certification level, age, years of formal education and troubleshooting rating had an effect on computer efficacy, computer perceived ease of use and computer playfulness. Beginner level technicians had higher efficacy and perceived ease of use mean scores than the more advanced Level III technicians. However, the older technicians had higher playfulness scores. The beginner level technicians also had lower troubleshooting scores, lower computer skill scores and used the computer less frequently than the experts. The expert troubleshooters had lower playfulness, efficacy and perceived ease of use scores than the beginning level troubleshooters. The expert troubleshooters used the computer more, had higher computer skill scores, as well as higher troubleshooting scores.

Results of the survey were discussed in terms of implications and areas for further research on attitude as it affects troubleshooting skill and computer playfulness measures. The higher playfulness scores of the older technicians were attributed to more experience and, possibly, an attitude independent of education and troubleshooting skill. The expert troubleshooters' lower efficacy and perceived usefulness scores were attributed to a more rigid, less flexible approach to troubleshooting duties, which may transfer to attitudes toward computers.
