Thesis (LL.M.)--University of Toronto (Canada), 1995.
This thesis considers the way that Canadian law protects the privacy of personal information. It examines how the law governs the collection, use, transfer, disclosure and retention of personal information by public and private sector institutions. The concepts of privacy and informational privacy are discussed in the introduction. Later chapters examine the relevant features of the common law, equity, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and selected data protection statues. Three data protection statues are discussed in detail: the Canadian Privacy Act, Ontario's Consumer Reporting Act and Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector. A series of proposed reforms to existing data protection statues are discussed in the conclusion.
