Thesis (M.Theo.)--Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada), 2013.
This thesis examines pastoral care from a uniquely Brethren in Christ (BIC) perspective. The original BIC mix of Pietist and Anabaptist influences situated pastoral care as the domain of all within the community of faith. The use of "Brethren" in their name, denotes a familial bond of brotherhood and mutual care not easily conveyed through other appellations. Postmodernism and the communication revolution are affecting most people and organizations and the BIC is no exception. The Emerging Church Conversation (ECC) is also affecting the church in general as a new reformation movement. A recent vision paper (BIC, 2009), put out by the BIC in Canada, addresses the need for change in light of these external forces of change. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the historic, and current, theology and values of the BIC with respect to pastoral care, while seriously engaging the current environment and the Emerging Church Conversation with intent of making recommendations for the immediate future.
