Thesis (D.Min.)--Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, 2013.
When Presbytery and local leaders gathered in 1998 to consider a new church development in a fast-growing suburb, the impetus was a major new retirement development. New (mostly old) Presbyterians were coming to town. Although the exploratory steering committee was composed of older adults, they discerned a mission to serve all generations. From the beginning they were challenged by their intergenerational mission: "In Jesus Christ and led by the Spirit, generations work together to live and share God's love and the Word with each other, our community and the world.".

The church offered a variety of activities during the week for children and youth, but worship is the primary opportunity for the community of faith to join together to worship and serve Christ. Word and Sacrament are central to our life together. Adopting a "blended" style of worship, the church adapts traditional practices to the contemporary cultures of our congregants. We incorporate a variety of music and liturgical styles within a thematic and usually lectionary-based design. We offer a praise team, bell choir, winds and string ensemble, choir, children's ensembles, and various other opportunities for people of different ages to offer their musical and liturgical gifts. We have a "Time with Young Disciples" to interpret scripture for pre-school and younger elementary children in the midst of worship, as well as a separate "Children's Chapel" during the sermon. Children and youth serve as liturgists for portions of worship each Sunday. Yet the participation of youth and young families declined as the church grew.

This project was designed to live into our mission more deeply by intentionally involving our confirmands and their families in planning and leading Reformed worship during Lent in 2011. Using narrative research models, we designed a confirmation worship experience that involved collaborative worship, Jennifer Lord's "resurrection speech," and attention to imagery, as well as an adaptation of John McClure's Round Table Pulpit to give voice to our confirmands and their families in the proclamation of the Word. Involving youth, their covenant partners, and their families in Bible study, worship planning, and worship leadership changed their understanding of worship and the church. The project also planted seeds for change in the way the worship team and the congregation understand worship and the church. As a result of this project by the power of the Holy Spirit, participating youth and their families told stories and increased their activities in the life of the church in ways that suggest they feel closer to Christ and to the church. The project strengthened the congregation's inter-generational understanding of worship, church, and mission.
